Odisha is an eastern Indian state on the Bay of Bengal. It’s known for its tribal cultures and its many ancient Hindu temples. The capital, Bhubaneswar, is home to hundreds of temples, notably the intricately-carved Mukteshvara and The Lingaraj Temple complex, dating to the 11th century.

Location

Odisha is an Indian state located in Eastern India. It is the 8th largest state by area. It’s the 11th largest by population and It neighbors the states of West Bengal and Jharkhand to the north, Chhattisgarh to the west, and Andhra Pradesh to the south. It has a coastline of 485 kilometers along the Bay of Bengal.

Language

Odia language is also spelled Oriya, an Indo-Aryan language with some 50 million speakers. A language officially recognized, or “scheduled,” in the Indian constitution and it is also the main official language of the Indian state of Odisha.

The city was used as the capital by many rulers, throughout the British era until 1948. History of Odisha

Ashoka of the Mauryan dynasty conquered Kalinga in the bloody Kalinga War in 261 BCE and it was the eighth year of his reign. According to his edicts, in that war about 100,000 people were killed, 150,000 were captured and more were affected the resulting bloodshed and suffering of the war are said to have deeply affected Ashoka. So, he turned into a pacifist and converted to Buddhism.

By c. 150 BCE, Emperor Khara vela, who was possibly a contemporary of Demetrius of Bactria, conquered a major part of the Indian sub-continent and Khara vela was a Jain ruler. He also built the monastery atop the Udayagiri hill and the region was ruled by monarchs, such as Samudragupta and Shashanka. It was a part of Harsha‘s empire.

In the 4th century CE, the city of Brahmapur in Odisha is known to have been the capital of the Kauravas during the closing years.

Odisha has a beautiful tradition of music. The figures of musicians and dancers carved on ancient temple walls, speak of Odisha’s rich musical heritage. Odissi Music is a classical form consisting of all the necessary ingredients common to Carnatic and Hindustani Music.

Odisha is a confluence of the Aryan, Dravidian, and Adivasi cultures and Most festivals in the state bring out some part of these cultures and celebrate their religion by way of festivals that span the entire year. Some festivals are common, but the celebration remains unique to a region like Chandan Yatra, Snana Yatra, and Ratha Yatra are observed with special gaiety and fervor at Puri although the last-mentioned one is celebrated at Bari pada, Athagarh, Dhenkanal, Koraput and other places even outside the state. Durga Puja is observed throughout the state and more particularly at Cuttack. Diwali or Kali Puja is celebrated in different parts of Odisha.

A typical meal in Odisha will comprise rice, dal, a vegetable dish or two, something fried, fish curry, or even meat. There’s a lot of similarity between Bengali food and Odisha – the two cuisines use pretty much the same kind of spices and ingredients, but in the end, they are quite distinct.
